Fresh-Cut vs. Living Christmas Trees

The Fresh-Cut Christmas Tree:

A fresh-cut Christmas tree is a real evergreen tree that has been cut down shortly before being sold for use as a Christmas decoration. These trees are typically harvested from tree farms and include varieties like fir, pine, and spruce. The tree is sold with the trunk freshly cut to ensure it can absorb water and stay hydrated, helping it remain fresh and vibrant throughout the holiday season. Fresh-cut trees require regular watering and care to prevent premature drying or needle loss.

Fun Facts:

  • Fresh-cut trees can absorb up to a gallon of water a day – To keep your tree fresh, it’s important to water it regularly, as a fresh cut allows the tree to drink and stay hydrated.

  • They produce a natural, pleasant scent – The fresh needles of evergreens like pine, fir, and spruce release oils that give off a signature piney, festive aroma that many associate with the holiday season.

  • Christmas trees are renewable resources – Tree farms grow new trees every year, so for every tree cut down, several new ones are planted, making fresh-cut trees a sustainable choice when sourced from responsible growers.

  • They help purify the air – Like all trees, Christmas trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen while they’re growing, improving air quality in the environment.

  • They’re biodegradable – Once the holiday season is over, fresh-cut Christmas trees can be recycled and turned into mulch, compost, or used for erosion control, making them an eco-friendly option.

How do I choose one?

We carry both native and non-native Christmas tree varieties.

Non-native, fresh-cut Christmas tree types include Fraser, Noble, Nordman, and Balsam Fir. Sometimes, people are concerned about choosing a tree that wasn’t grown specifically in Colorado; however certain climates around the country are more apt to produce a more viable and less costly tree. These trees are grown in soils that lack specific nutrients for growing other crops and other harvests, but which are perfect for growing a Christmas Tree. Since these trees have been planted with the sole purpose to be cut down and set up inside your home, there is no need for these trees to be grown locally. And some of the most popular varieties, like Fraser Fir for example, do not grow in Colorado and thus, have to be out-sourced.

Will they last?

Our Fresh-Cut Trees, whether you choose Native or non-Native, will last into the New Year as long as they are cared for properly. Please consult our Christmas Tree Care Guide for instructions on how you can give these trees their best chance!

Which varieties of Fresh-Cut Trees do we sell?

We carry the following Fresh-Cut Tree varieties: Fraser Fir, Noble Fir, Nordman Fir, Douglas Fir and Balsam Fir. We do not sell spruce or pine as they are a low-quality Christmas Tree.

Approximate Price Range:

Prices will vary tree to tree as everything is priced individually and tagged on the tree. However, our range of pricing is between $79-$599, with the most commonly sold trees at 6 to 8 feet tall, averaging between $150-299.

The Living Christmas Tree:

A living Christmas tree is a real, potted evergreen tree that is kept alive and can be replanted after the holiday season. Unlike fresh-cut trees, living trees are typically sold with their roots intact in a container, allowing them to be cared for indoors during the holidays and then transplanted back outside in a garden or yard once the season is over. Common types of living Christmas trees include pines, spruces, and firs. The advantage of a living tree is that it can be enjoyed for multiple years, provided it is properly cared for and not kept indoors for too long, as prolonged indoor conditions can stress the tree.

Fun Facts:

  • They can be reused year after year – Since living Christmas trees are kept in pots with their roots intact, they can be planted outdoors after the holidays and enjoyed for many years, growing larger each season.

  • They need to be indoors for no more than 10-14 days – Living trees should be kept indoors only for a short period to avoid stress; too much time in warm indoor air can damage their roots and hinder their ability to thrive outside.

  • They come in various sizes – Living Christmas trees are available in different sizes, from small tabletop trees to large, full-sized trees, making them adaptable for various spaces and preferences.

  • They’re good for the environment.

  • They have a longer lifespan – Unlike cut trees that last only for a few weeks, living Christmas trees can live for decades if properly cared for, making them a lasting, environmentally-friendly option for families.

How do I choose one?

When picking out a living Christmas tree you have different options than a fresh-cut Christmas Tree.

  • Pick the Right Species – Choose a tree species suited for your local climate and yard conditions. Popular options for living Christmas trees include Norway Spruce, Blue Spruce, Douglas Fir, and Pine. All of our Living Christmas trees are native to Colorado, and if taken care of, will thrive for decades.

  • Consider Size and Space – Make sure to choose a tree that fits your space both indoors and outdoors. Measure the area where you plan to place the tree to avoid it being too large for your home. Also, check how large the tree will grow when planted outside to ensure it won't outgrow your yard.

  • Living trees are heavier than fresh cut trees. The root system of the tree can easily weigh 50-100 pounds. Make sure you have the proper help to place the tree in your home.
